PostHeaderIcon Preventative Dentistry – the best way to keep a healthy smile

Preventative DentistryMost people don’t like visiting their dentist. Not surprisingly a lot of people can get scared when it comes to having metal hooks and drills put in their mouth. Funnily enough, the best way to avoid painful visits to the dentist is to make regular visits to your hygienist – Preventative Dentistry. It is recommended that people should visit the dental hygienist every 6 months so as to avoid cavities and other oral health issues which will require more painful visits to your dentist.

At Oriel Villas Dental in Cheltenham we have an onsite dental hygienist. A typical visit consists of the following:

  • Dental hygiene examination – firstly they will examine your teeth, gums and mouth to look for plaque build ups or any other symptoms. If you make regular visits to the hygienist and look after your teeth properly in between visits, you should have no problems here.
  • Scale and Polish – scale and polish is another way of describing dental cleaning. It is called scale and polish because at our Cheltenham clinic it is a two stage procedure. During the first step the hygienist will remove the plaque from your teeth and gums. Plaque or calculus builds up around your teeth and gums and is a fertile breeding ground for bacteria which can lead to cavities and worse. Plaque is removed using an ultrasonic instrument in the first instance. This ultrasonic device removes larger pieces of tartar by creating vibrations which separate it from your teeth. Fine tools will then be used to remove the remaining tartar which will be scraped off. Once all the tartar is removed, your hygienist will polish your teeth. Polishing is done with a slow speed hand piece with a soft rubber cup that spins on the end.
  • Daily dental hygiene advice – once your oral health has been examined and your teeth have been thoroughly cleaned your professional hygienist will then discuss your dental hygiene habits with you. You will get some feedback on the effectiveness of your oral health routine and some tips (if needed) about how to improve them.
  • Fluoride Therapy – this is only for patients who are at high risk. You will need to have your teeth covered with a layer of fluoride which helps to protect them from decay.

Preventative Dentistry is important!

So, it is worth my while visiting the dental hygienist I hear you ask. Well that decision is your own but here are some of the advantages that our patients have reported from making the visit.

  • The main advantage of visiting a hygienist is the old saying that a stitch in time saves nine. By visiting the hygienist and removing the causes of dental problems before they take effect you can avoid painful time spent in the dentist’s chair later on. A visit to the hygienist should be comfortable and relatively pain free especially when compared to the time spent getting fillings or being treated for gum disease.
  • Lots of people love total clean feeling they get on their teeth after a visit the hygienist. They have told us they can’t stop running their tongue around their mouth after they have visited the hygienist.
  • You can brush up on your dental hygiene habits. Some of our patients were amazed to find out they had not been brushing their teeth correctly for over 40 years. The next time they returned to have their teeth cleaned, there was noticeably less plaque after building up.

If you are around the Cheltenham area and are interested in visiting our dental hygienist for a professional teeth cleaning, a check-up or just having a chat about your dental hygiene routine, then get in touch to arrange an appointment. At Oriel Villas, conveniently located in Cheltenham our hygienist is highly qualified and has many years experience helping patients with preventative dentistry.

PostHeaderIcon Professional Teeth Whitening – What is your best option?

Teeth Whitening CheltenhamWhy you should have your teeth whitened professionally

You have decided that your teeth are a bit off colour and you want to do something about it. It could be that your teeth have become stained from smoking or the foods and drinks you consume and you are now looking into teeth whitening treatments. People in Cheltenham have two options when it comes to teeth whitening – to pay more to have it carried out professionally by your dentist or to buy a kit for home usage.

At Oriel Villas Dental we always recommend that teeth whitening is carried out in-clinic and supervised by dental professionals. The reasons for this are:

  • Your dentist has access to far more powerful whitening agents
  • The whitening agent can damage your skin and other tissue
  • A check-up is necessary to make sure you a suitable candidate

Your dentist has access to far more powerful whitening agents

As whitening gels and pastes can damage tissue they come into contact with, their peroxide content is regulated. Within the EU teeth whitening kits which are available to the public cannot contain more than 0.1% peroxide. This is a very low level of concentration compared to kits available to dental professionals which can contain up to 6% peroxide concentration. Whilst over the counter kits may be cheaper, it is worth considering their potential to achieve good results.

Whitening agents can be dangerous

All tooth-bleaching materials are based primarily on hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Whilst a reasonable dose can be safely applied to teeth it is dangerous if it comes into contact with other parts of your body particularly exposed tissue areas like gums, lips, cheeks, throat or oral cavity. There have been nasty cases reported where home whitening kits have burned people’s lips and gums. Also if the whitening agent leaks from the tray it can damage your mucus membranes in your oral cavity and gastric tract.

One of the advantages of having whitening done professionally is that your dentist will take the necessary precautions to make sure the treatment is not detrimental to your oral health. Depending on the type of teeth whitening you choose these precautions can include:

  • Custom fitting your tray to make sure it is a good fit and that the whitening agent does not leak
  • Covering your gums and using a cheek retractor to make sure that they do not come into contact with the bleaching compound

Tooth Whitening is not suitable for all patients and may have an adverse effect on your condition if you suffer from gum disease or other dental health problems. It is therefore advisable to come for a checkup before embarking on any teeth whitening procedure. This checkup comes as standard with our professional tooth whitening package.

Professional Teeth Whitening in Cheltenham

If you opt for professional teeth whitening, you have two options both of which are available at Oriel Villas Dental. The first is known as home supervised whitening. As part of this process you will come in for a check-up. Your dentist will discuss the results you expect to achieve and then prescribe a whitening agent with the peroxide concentration necessary to achieve the required result. You will be fitted with an application tray and we will demonstrate how to use them properly as you undergo your first round of treatment under our supervision in the clinic. After this you will continue with the treatment for between 2 – 4 weeks at home with application periods typically lasting from 30 minutes to an hour.

A more powerful option available at our Cheltenham based clinic is laser teeth whitening. This has the potential to achieve the greatest results and can whiten your teeth by up to 8 shades in one hour. After the necessary safety precautions, the bleaching agent is applied to your teeth which are then exposed to a specialised light to activate the peroxide compound. The procedure is repeated three times and lasts for about fifteen minutes each time.

If you are considering any sort of tooth whitening procedure then please get in touch. Our friendly team of dental professionals are always more than happy to have a chat and discuss the options open to you.

PostHeaderIcon The advantages of Dental Implants over traditional methods of tooth replacement

Advantages of Dental Implants

advantages of dental implants

The use of dental implants to replace missing teeth has become very popular in recent years. Dental implants are a titanium rod that is inserted into your gums and can hold a restoration (otherwise known as a crown in place), giving the appearance of a natural tooth. If you are missing teeth or have teeth that need replacing, you now have the option of replacing them with a bridge, denture or dental implant. This post looks at these three methods and sets out the advantages of dental implants.

A dental bridge is the traditional method of using the surrounding teeth to support a crown. The main disadvantage of this method is that the surrounding teeth can be damaged by the bridge. Another disadvantage of bridges is that they do not last for a lifetime and it is likely they will need to be replaced after several years. Whilst they are not permanent and can have a detrimental impact on your other teeth, bridges are available quite cheaply on the NHS.

Dentures are another temporary method of tooth replacement. They have progressed a lot since the days when your parents kept big dentures in a glass beside their bed. They are now available in smaller and more comfortable sizes and fits. Still they are only a temporary replacement and some discomfort may be felt by the person wearing them. They also require maintenance and have to be taken in and out to be cleaned. It is difficult to eat with dentures in so be prepared to eat easy to chew foods or take them out when eating. Like bridges, dentures are available cheaply on the NHS.

The most modern method for replacing missing teeth is dental implants. These are a better solution to both dentures and dental bridges. As stated above, they consist of a titanium base which is fitted into your gums and used to support a crown. They are fitted by a trained surgeon in two stages, presuming it is a straightforward case and the bone condition in your alveolar ridges is good.

Whilst a superior means of teeth replacement, dental implants are a more expensive option. They are only available on the NHS as a last resort and in exceptional circumstances where neither braces or a bridge are deemed suitable. Most dental implant procedures are paid for privately but in our in opinion they are well worth the money for the following reasons:

  • They are a permanent solution. If cared for properly, it is possible that dental implants will last the rest of your life. The first dental implant was fitted in 1965 and as of a few years ago the recipient was still alive with the implant intact.
  • They are easy to maintain. They can be maintained in much the same way as normal teeth. They do not need to be removed to be cleaned. They will act in the same way as your natural teeth have done.
  • They will not damage any of the surrounding teeth as is common with dental bridges.
  • There is a high rate of success – Improvements in the technology behind dental implants mean that recent clinical studies have had 98% success rates.
  • They prevent bone degeneration. One of the lesser known benefits of heaving healthy teeth is that the roots help to maintain the bone and tissue in your gums. Without roots to support your gum ridges, the bone and tissue will atrophy or wear away over time. This will cause your face and cheeks to have a sunken appearance.

If you think the advantages of dental implants are worth the extra cash please get in touch with our clinic to find out more about dental implants in Cheltenham. Two experienced implant surgeons Dr Ramy Magdy and Dr Jakub Wojcicki both fit implants at our clinic and attract patients from all over Gloucestershire for dental implants.

We offer free consultations for patients considering dental implants so feel free to get in touch and our dentists would be delighted to take the time to give you more information on the procedure and to talk about your specific case. CT scans can help the implant surgeons to plan for your treatment. If required, we can refer you to a separate clinic where they can take a CT scan for you.
