Inlays and onlays, also known as indirect fillings, can be used to restore areas of decay and damage that are too extensive to be treated with a normal filling.
They also can provide a less invasive and more affordable alternative to a crown. Inlays and onlays are usually placed in the back teeth, but can be used to repair areas on the front teeth too.
Inlays and onlays are custom made, created outside the mouth before being fitted into place. An inlay is cemented within the cavity, and an onlay covers more of the tooth. They are long lasting and made from hardwearing materials, including e.max ceramic, white composite and gold.
Why have an inlay or onlay?
- Tailored to fit
- Preserves more of the healthy tooth
- Easy to keep clean
- Protects and strengthens the tooth
- More durable and stable than a filling
What does the treatment involve?
Initially, we remove any areas of decay or old fillings and thoroughly clean the tooth. We take impressions of your tooth so your inlay or onlay will exactly match the area to be filled.
A temporary restoration is fitted to protect the prepared tooth while your bespoke inlay or onlay is being created.
When ready, your inlay or onlay is checked for correct fit and comfort before being fixed permanently into place. When properly maintained, with effective cleaning and regular dental examinations, these restorations last for many years.
