A tooth is built a bit like a boiled egg. On the outside is enamel, which is hard, slightly translucent and, in a healthy adult, closer to the colour of skimmed milk than to a sheet of paper. Underneath sits dentine, which is naturally yellow and makes up most of the tooth. What you see when you smile is dentine showing through enamel. So when patients at Oriel Villas Dental Surgery ask why their teeth are yellow, the first thing I say is that a little yellow is not a fault. It is what teeth are made of.
