That is the honest starting point for comparing Invisalign with fixed braces at Oriel Villas Dental Surgery in Cheltenham. Both straighten teeth. Both work. The decision is about what you can live with, what your teeth need and what you want the finish to look like. Here is how they compare on the things that matter.

What we offer

On the aligner side we provide Invisalign, a series of clear removable trays changed every week or two. On the fixed side we provide self ligating fixed braces, including the Cfast system, which uses clear brackets and tooth coloured wires and is aimed at the front teeth that show when you smile. Traditional metal braces are still an option where the case calls for them. Our fixed braces page has the detail.

Appearance

Invisalign wins this one, and it is usually the reason people ask about it first. The aligners are close to invisible at conversational distance; the small tooth coloured attachments on some teeth are the only giveaway, and most people never spot them. Cfast braces are discreet by the standards of braces, with clear brackets and a pale wire, but they are still braces. In a photograph taken up close, you will see them.

Comfort

Both systems cause a couple of days of tightness every time the force changes, which for aligners is each new tray and for a fixed brace is each adjustment. The difference is in the mouth around the teeth. Aligners are smooth plastic and rarely bother the cheeks or lips. Brackets and wire ends can rub, particularly in the first fortnight, and most patients keep a little orthodontic wax handy until the mouth toughens up. Neither is painful in the way people fear, but aligners are the gentler daily companion.

Eating and cleaning

Here the two systems trade places depending on your temperament. With Invisalign you take the trays out to eat and drink anything other than water, so there is no list of forbidden foods, but there is a routine: out, eat, brush, in. With a fixed brace you eat with it in, avoid the things that will snap a bracket (hard crusts, whole apples, toffee, chewing pen lids) and spend longer with the toothbrush working around the wire. Cleaning around a fixed brace is harder and plaque collects around brackets, so the hygienist becomes a more regular fixture.

Discipline

This is the section to read twice. A fixed brace works whether you feel like it or not. Invisalign only works for the hours it is in, and the target is about 22 hours a day. Most adults manage this without much trouble. Some find that a busy job, long lunches or simply forgetting the case at home means the trays are out for four or five hours a day, the teeth stop tracking with the plan, and treatment stretches. If you know yourself well enough to suspect that, a fixed brace is the kinder choice, not the lesser one.

What each can fix

For crowding, spacing, mild rotations and teeth that have relapsed after childhood braces, both systems do the job well and the choice is yours. For severe crookedness, big rotations, teeth that need moving up or down rather than sideways, and significant bite correction, fixed braces remain the stronger tool and we will say so at the consultation. Cfast is specifically designed for the visible front teeth, so it suits cosmetic front tooth alignment rather than full arch correction.

Treatment time

Very similar, case for case. Simple front tooth corrections can finish in around three months with either system. Most cases we treat are done within a year, and complex ones can run to eighteen months. Fixed braces are slightly more predictable on timing because they do not depend on wear time; aligners can be just as quick if the 22 hours are kept.

Appointments

Invisalign patients see us roughly every six to eight weeks to check progress and collect the next trays. Fixed brace patients come in on a similar rhythm for adjustments, with the occasional extra visit if a bracket comes off or a wire needs replacing. Both fit around a working week; the fixed brace is the one more likely to need an unplanned visit.

Cost

At Oriel Villas, Invisalign is from £3,500 for one arch and from £4,500 for both. Fixed braces are from £2,500 for one arch and from £3,500 for both. The orthodontic consultation is £80 and retainers are £200 whichever route you take, all listed on our fees page. The aligner premium of around £1,000 buys invisibility and removability; if neither matters much to you, the fixed brace is the better value. We break the numbers down further in our guide to how much Invisalign costs in Cheltenham.

After treatment

Identical. Whichever system straightened the teeth, retainers keep them straight, worn every night at first and then as we advise. Fixed braces come off in a single appointment; Invisalign attachments are polished off in the same way. Both leave you with teeth that need protecting from their own memory.

So which is right for you?

Choose Invisalign if discretion is the deciding factor, your case is mild to moderate, and you are confident you will wear the trays. Choose a fixed brace if your teeth need bigger movements, you would rather not think about the treatment between appointments, or the price difference matters. Choose Cfast if the problem is the front six teeth and you want a fast, discreet fix at a fixed brace price.

And if you are still unsure, that is what the consultation is for. We scan the teeth, show you the predicted result, and tell you which system will get there, including when the answer is not the one you came in expecting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch from fixed braces to Invisalign part way through?

Occasionally, for example to finish a case discreetly once the heavy movements are done. It needs a fresh scan and a new plan, so it is not a casual swap. Ask at a review appointment if you are considering it.

Are clear aligners suitable for teenagers?

Yes, provided the adult teeth are through and the teenager can be relied on to keep the trays in. For some families a fixed brace removes the negotiation entirely.

Which is better for a lisp or speech?

Aligners can cause a slight lisp for the first few days that disappears as the tongue adjusts. Fixed braces on the front teeth rarely affect speech at all.

Do I still need retainers after fixed braces?

Yes. Retainers are not an Invisalign thing; they are a teeth thing. Every straightened smile needs them.
